My Most Treasured Possession

We all know that “experiences” and “memories” are more important than physical possessions. However, some possessions represent big, important things.

One of my most treasured possessions is my father’s turquoise ring that my mother gave him in the early 1970’s. I thought he had been buried with it and that it was lost and gone forever.

In 2010, I was going through a horrible divorce. I thought I was going to die of my broken heart. My mom flew to Salt Lake City from California to be with me as I was moving. I asked her where the ring was, she said she didn’t know, she couldn’t remember if he had been buried in it.

A few days later my mom was handing me that ring. She had gotten it back from the family friend she had given it to when my father died.

Two years ago, I misplaced my dads ring. I couldn’t find it ANYWHERE and I was devastated. When I was traveling on a speaking gig to Long Beach and I was praying to God, “Show me I am on the right path. Please give me a sign that speaking all over the place is a good idea.” As I was rifling through a rarely used pocket in my suitcase looking for my makeup I had tossed in while rushing out the door, I pulled out my dads ring with my eyeshadow.

That ring was the sign I had asked for. And once again I was crying about that damn ring.

That ring doesn’t just represent my dad.

It represents the idea that no matter how hard things get, spiritual deaths can be awakenings.

It represents my Paiute heritage.

It represents the feminine, spiritual grounding, patience, and intuition.

It represents a reminder that my father’s legacy lives on.
